The Northern Arapaho Tribe and the city of Riverton, Wyoming, have proposed an agreement to address common issues and resolve disputes.
The agreement focuses on zoning, land-use planning and economic development. The tribe and the city will go to mediation instead of court when disputes arise.
The tribe has contended that Riverton is still part of the reservation but the state courts have ruled that the city is no longer Indian Country. The agreement does not confer of acknowledge tribal authority in Riverton, the mayor said.
Some city residents questioned the deal at a public meeting on Monday. The agreement is likely to be finalized by the end of the year, a city official said.
