Lawmakers concerned about auction of tribal land
Members of South Dakota's Congressional delegation are concerned about the auction of land belonging to the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-South Dakota), Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota) and Sen. John Thune (R-South Dakota) said they had been working with the Internal Revenue Service and the tribe to resolve an employment tax issue. They expressed surprised that the IRS went through with an auction of 7,100 acres of tribal property. "It's unfortunate that the issue was not resolved after several previous attempts, and has resulted in the seizing of land by the IRS," Herseth Sandlin said on a media conference call, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported. The tribe filed a lawsuit to stop the sale. Judge Roberto Lange said the land won't change hands until he resolves the dispute. Get the Story:
