The Internal Revenue Service auctioned off 7,100 acres of land owned by the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe of South Dakota.
The land sold for $2.6 million, less than the $4.6 million appraisal, the Associated Press reported. The property was auctioned to pay off $3.1 million that the IRS says the tribe owes for unpaid employment taxes.
""It's very disgraceful, very shameful. It's devastating to us," Chairman Brandon Sazue told the AP. "Our land is never for sale."
The tribe has 180 days to repurchase the land. A lawsuit is pending in federal court.
