Decision on Peltier parole likely in three weeks
The U.S. Parole Commission is expected to make a decision on imprisoned American Indian Movement activist Leonard Peltier within three weeks, the Associated Press reports. The commission held a closed-door hearing yesterday at a federal prison in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. A representative of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians said the tribe will welcome Peltier back to the reservation if he wins parole. Drew Wrigley, the outgoing U.S. Attorney for North Dakota, submitted a 17-page letter to the commission, saying Peltier's release would pose a public safety risk. An FBI agent also testified against parole. Peltier was convicted for the June 1975 murders of two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Get the Story:
