The Klamath Tribes of Oregon announced an agreement to end a dispute over water rights in the Klamath Basin.
The tribe filed a claim against the Klamath Water Users Association to seek more water for endangered fish. But both parties decided to drop the dispute as part of the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement, which calls for the removal of dams in the basin.
”After years of bitter disputes and lawsuits, we can turn our attention to providing economic and water stability to both our communities,” Klamath council member Jeff Mitchell told The Eureka Times-Standard.
As part of the deal, farmers in the basin agreed to reduce irrigation and will receive some compensation.
