Officials in Pima County, Arizona, sent a letter to the Bureau of Indian Affairs , raising concerns about a proposed jail on the Tohono O'odham Nation.
The officials say the BIA should undertake a full environmental impact study of the project. They say the environmental assessment that is open for public comments is inadequate.
The facility would be located on the reservation on land owned by individual tribal members. Plans call for a 750-bed, 140,000 square-food facility that would mainly house immigrants being returned to their home countries.
The site is not far from the town of Sahuarita. Residents and officials there are opposed to the project.
