A $1.5 million settlement has been reached in a lawsuit over the shootings at a public school on the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota.

MacNeil Environmental agreed to pay 21 plaintiffs representing the victims of the March 21, 2005, shootings at Red Lake High School. The families said the company, which was hired by the school district, failed to come up with crisis plans.

Hennepin County District Court Judge Lloyd Zimmerman called the agreement a "historic settlement of the most horrific school tragedy in Minnesota history," The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

Zimmerman said he will oversee distribution of the settlement , which is being called one of the largest of its kind in the nation. The families already settled a lawsuit against the school district for $1 million.

Seven students, teachers and staff were killed at the school by 16-year-old Jeffrey Weise, who also shot and killed his grandfather and his grandfather’s girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.
