Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) accepted more than $2,500 in gifts from an Alaska Native executive despite vowing a crackdown on gift-giving to state officials, The Washington Post reports.
Palin accepted a $2,200 ivory puffin mask, a woven grass fan worth $300 and a $150 ivory necklace from Matthew Nicolai, the CEO of Calista Corporation, an Alaska Native regional corporation. The gifts came in January 2007, when Palin sent an ethics proposal to the state Legislature.
One of Calista's lobbyists in Wendy Chamberlain, who daughter is friends with Palin's daughter. Chamberlain said she and the governor are not friends.
But Chamberlain's business puts her close to the Palin family. Another client is the the Alaska Native-owned Red Dog mine, which paid for travel by Todd, the governor's husband.
Palin also accepted $1,000 in gifts -- an Aleut woven basket, a sea otter headband, a Tlingit rattle and an Athabascan chief necklace -- from the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Executives of several of Chamberlain's clients sit on the center's board, The Post reported.
