The Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Association passed a resolution on Friday endorsing Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois) for president.

"Whether the issue is self-determination, law enforcement, housing, health care, education, protection of Native cultures and languages, or combating the spread of methamphetamines in Tribal communities, Barack Obama is committed to working hand-in-hand with Native American communities to address our needs and aspirations," the resolution states.

Obama visited South Dakota in May and met with more 50 Sioux leaders in Rapid City. He was given a painted Lakota buffalo chief's robe by the tribes.

The GPTCA represents 16 tribes in Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.
