The Bureau of Indian Affairs has sent 25 temporary police officers to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
The officers are helping after about half of the police force for the Oglala Sioux Tribe walked out on the job on Tuesday. Only 12 to 14 tribal officers remain for a 2.2 million-acre reservation.
The tribe says BIA budget cuts have contributed to staff shortages and longer work assignments. The tribe and the BIA met on Thursday to discuss the issue.
A temporary assignment of about 20 BIA officers to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation is costing the agency $1 million.
