The Yankton Sioux Tribe is asking state and federal officials to review a water permit for a hog farm in Charles Mix County, South Dakota.

The tribe opposes the proposed farm, citing impacts on health and the environment. But since the site is not on trust land, the tribe hopes the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Environmental Protection Agency to review a state water permit.

Long View Farms of Iowa plans to process up to 70,000 pigs a year at the farm. The only way to reach the site is through a road maintained by the Bureau of Indian Affairs but a judge said the county never transferred ownership to the federal government.
