The National Congress of American Indians met with Interior Secretary Dirk
Kempthorne on May 14 to discuss leadership at the Bureau of
Indian Affairs.
Assistant secretary Carl Artman, a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, is resigning May 23. With only a few months remaining in the Bush administration, NCAI wants a replacement named quickly.
Jackie Johnson, the executive director of NCAI, said Majel Russell, a member of the Crow Tribe of Montana, would be logical choice. Russell currently serves as principal deputy assistant secretary.
Kempthorne could appoint someone in an acting capacity.
