Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), the longest-serving Republican in the Senate, lost his bid for re-election, according to the latest vote tally from Tuesday.
Stevens ran for another term even though he was convicted of corruption a week before the election. Vote counts after November 4 showed him in the lead against Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, a Democrat.
But more recent counts put Begich over the top as Senate Republicans considered ousting Stevens. They delayed a vote yesterday in order to wait for the final results.
Stevens is the former chairman of the Senate Appropriations
Committee and is one of the most powerful members of the Senate. He has used
his position to help Alaska Native corporations and to pressure Alaska tribes
and villages, who disagree with his stances on tribal sovereignty.
