Members of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa of Wisconsin go to the polls today to choose their leaders.
President Victoria Doud and her allies on the tribal council are seeking re-election. Opponents say Doud and her administration have mismanaged the tribe's finances and they want to audit of the tribe's books to prove it.
Doud opposes the financial review and has denied any wrongdoing. Her stance has angered tribal members, who say she orchestrated the removal of two council members who criticized her.
The ousted council members, along with their allies, filed for election but five of them were removed from the ballot. Critics say Doud was behind the effort.
