Members of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa
and Chippewa Indians are going to the polls today to decide who will lead the Michigan tribe.
Incumbent chairman Robert Kewaygoshkum faces a challenge from Derek Bailey. Kewaygoshkum beat Bailey by 23 votes in an election in May but the tribal court invalidated the results because the election board made unsubstantiated allegations against Bailey less than 24 hours before the vote.
Bailey said he was unable to respond in such a short time period. The election board made the allegations in an e-mail sent to all gaming and government employees of the tribe.
