Overall crime rate has dropped on Soboba Reservation

The overall crime rate on the Soboba Reservation in California has dropped in the past two years, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports.

Based on county statistics, assaults, burglaries, theft-related incidents and drug-related calls dropped in 2007. There were increases in misdemeanor batteries and robberies in 2007.

But there were two homicides on the reservation last year. And the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection won't respond to calls without sheriff's escorts due to a recent spike in violent chase incidents.

Chairman Robert Salgado said the tribe is worried that CalFire's new policy will delay response times for emergency calls. The tribe hopes to reverse the policy.
