Idaho gas tax deals go to Legislature for approval

The Idaho Legislature will have final say over gasoline tax agreements with four tribes.

Gov. Butch Otter (R) signed deals with the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, the Nez Perce Tribe, the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes and the Kootenai Tribe. The agreements require the tribes to collect the same gasoline tax as the state's, with the revenues to go towards transportation needs.

"We were able to negotiate in good faith," said Coeur d'Alene Tribal Chairman Chief Allan told The Spokesman Review. "It was a give and take on both sides."

There was debate whether the deals need legislative approval. Otter said it was best to give lawmakers a role in the process..
