A bill to impose a tax on gasoline sold on reservations unless tribes reach an agreement with the state was passed by the Idaho House on Thursday.
The House voted 49-18 on the bill. Opponents said it would jeopardize negotiations the tribes have started with Gov. Butch Otter (R).
Idaho Republicans led the charge on the bill though their past efforts have been thrown out by state and federal courts.
"Last year, the Indians promised us that they would negotiate this and have it done in a year's time," one Republican said, the Associated Press reported. "It was not done."
