"The increasingly common cry of "not in my backyard" became even more complicated when the Yakama Nation last week barred new dairies, feedlots or the expansion of either within the reservation.
This case centers on a Sunnyside family who wants to build a dairy for up to 6,000 cows on land they own along Pumphouse Road south of Harrah.
But the proposal has drawn vehement opposition from tribal and nontribal members alike, who fear the possibility of groundwater contamination, as well as the stench, flies and potential impacts on wildlife.
Part of the debate can probably be attributed to NIMBYism, where nearby residents object to changes in the way land around them is used."
