Conference focuses on AIDS in Indian Country

The 2007 United States Conference on AIDS began on Thursday with a focus on HIV and AIDS among American Indians and Alaska Natives.

Native Americans were less than 1 percent of new AIDS cases in 2005. But experts say that number is low due to underreporting and lack of testing in Indian Country.

Nationally, the HIV/AIDS rate for Native Americans is 10.6 per 100,000, according to the American Foundation for AIDS Research. That's the third highest rate in the nation.

The conference is taking place in Palm Springs, California. It ends Sunday.
