The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island re-elected Matthew Thomas as chief sachem on Saturday.
According to unofficial returns cited by The Providence Journal, Thomas defeated challenger Paulla Dove Jennings by a more than 2-1 margin. "I’m humbled," Thomas, a former janitor, told the paper.
Thomas said he would continue efforts to protect the tribe's rights. A land-into-trust lawsuit is making its way to the U.S. Supreme Court and the tribe is lobbying Congress to amend its land claims settlement act.
