The Coeur d'Alene Tribe signed a gas tax agreement with the state of Idaho on Tuesday.
The tribe will charge the same 25-cents-per-gallon tax as the state's. Revenues of about $800,000 a year will be used for transportation and law enforcement.
For years, Republican lawmakers have been trying to force tribes to collect taxes and submit them to the state. The state and federal courts repeatedly struck down the laws they passed.
The lawmakers changed tactics and passed a new law that imposed a December deadline on the state to read a deal with tribes. The Nez Perce Tribe and the Shoshone-Bannock Nation also operate gas stations and are negotiating agreements.
