Indian health care markup, rally in Washington

Reauthorization of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act is the focus in Washington, D.C., today.

The Senate Finance Committee is holding an open markup of the Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) portions of the bill [PDF]. The session starts at 10:15am in Dirksen Senate Office Building Room 215.

At 1:30pm, the National Indian Health Board, National Congress of American Indians, National Council on Urban Indian Health, National Indian Education Association and the National Indian Housing Council are holding a rally in the U.S. Capitol to build momentum for the bill. Speakers include tribal leaders and members of Congress [DOC: Draft Agenda].

The IHCIA expired in 2000. Efforts to reauthorize the law have been met with opposition from the Bush administration.
