High school to offer Onondaga language classes

The LaFayette High School in New York will offer Onondaga language classes for the first time this fall.

The Onondaga Nation School on the reservation teaches Ongwehonwekha up through the eighth grade. Students can now continue their language instruction at LaFayette .

Elaina Powless, 13, who will be a freshman at LaFayette is excited about the new classes. "Having one more year to learn is great because we're losing our language as time goes on. Not enough people are taking the time to learn it," she tells The Syracuse Post-Standard.

The school district eventually plans to include Ongwehonwekha in the state's Regents diploma program.
