Gila River Indian Community rejects waste facility

The Gila River Indian Community of Arizona has rejected a permanent permit for a waste recycling facility.

Romic Environmental Technologies Corp was operating on the reservation with an interim permit since 1988. Tribal members opposed the facility, citing pollution and the company's violation of environmental laws.

In April, a flash fire broke out at the plant, resulting in Environmental Protection Agency fines. Last November, an accident left a noticeable smell, and Romic was fined by the EPA in 2002 and 2003.

The company says it has a lease until 2021 and will continue to process waste until ordered not to do so. The facility employs almost 60 people.
