Sotheby’s will auction 28 letters written by sports legend Jim Thorpe.
The letters are from the mid-1920s. They were written by Thorpe, a member of the Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma, to Freeda Fitzpatrick, who became his second wife.
The writings cover Thorpe's careers in football and baseball. In one, Thorpe tells Freeda Freeda that “your Injun is having one of the greatest years in baseball.”
Freeda, who died in March at the age of 101, kept the letters after she divorced Thorpe. Bill and Jack Thorpe, two of their sons, decided to put them up for auction.
The auction takes place next Tuesday in New York.
