An 80-year-old ticket discovered in an old book has uncovered another hidden talent of sports legend Jim Thorpe, the Sac and Fox man who is considered one of the world's greatest athletes.
The ticket was to an exhibition basketball game featuring Jim Thorpe and "His World Famous Indians" on March 1, 1927. Historians, and even Thorpe's own son, never knew Thorpe -- an Olympian and star in football, baseball and track and field -- played basketball at a professional-like level.
Anthony Barone Jr., who found the ticket in a $6 book he bought at an auction, later discovered that Thorpe and his all-Indian team played a tour of 45 games. Some newspaper account have since been located that describe some of the games.
