The Indian Health Care Improvement Act includes provisions aimed at helping the Navajo Nation and the Mescalero Apache Nation in New Mexico.
Sen. Pete Domenici (R-New Mexico), a co-sponsor of S.1200, said the bill authorizes a study to determine whether the Navajo Nation can manage its own Medicaid program. Since the tribe's reservation cross three states, the tribe has to deal with three different systems.
Domenici, a member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, said another provision authorizes a demonstration project on the Mescalero Apache Reservation to help tribes cut through red tape and improve health facilities. Four other areas are included in the project.
The committee approved the bill last week.
