Indians in South Dakota trail the rest of the state in just about every health indicator, the state Health Department says.
The Indian infant mortality rate is more than twice the rate for non-Indians. Indians have a higher incidence of new cancer diagnoses than non-Indians and a significantly higher death rate from all cancers.
Indians in the state also have higher rates of deaths from accidents and diabetes. The overall death rate for Indians is the highest n the nation of any race group.
"This is a very large gap which must be closed," Dr. Lon Kightlinger, who is looking at Indian health statistics for a state task force, told The Sioux Falls Argus Leader.
