For the first time in the history of the Santa Fe Indian Market, a glass artist has been chosen as the poster artist.
Marvin Oliver, who is Quinault and Isleta Pueblo, was announced as the poster artist for the 2007 market. "It was an honor to be selected," said Oliver, who flew to New Mexico from Seattle for the unveiling of the poster on Thursday.
Oliver, who is also a sculptor and printmaker, created "Shaman Tells the Raven’s Tale" especially for the market. The piece is a fused glass, 41.5” x 19” that depicts the Raven, a central figure in Northwest Coast culture.
Oliver has been a regular participant in the art market, held every August. Last year, one of his works was the first glass piece to win a sculpture award.
This year's market takes place August 18-19.
