The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts announced the 2005 recipients of its lifetime achievement, fellowship and youth awards on Wednesday.
Lifetime achivement awards went to to the late Fritz Scholder (Luiseno), painter, printmaker; the late Lucy Yepa Lowden (Jemez Pueblo), textile artist and �little people� creator; Josephine Nahohai (Zuni Pueblo), traditional potter; Joe S. Sando (Jemez Pueblo), historian, author; and Ruth Schultz, who is non-Native.
Fellowship awards went to Armand Fritz (Hopi) Katsina carver; Cavan Gonzales (San Ildefonso Pueblo), potter; John I. King (Navajo), painter; Hyrum C. Joe (Navajo), painter; Gerald Scott Lomaventema (Hopi), jeweler; Wallace Nez, Jr. (Navajo), potter; Cody Sanderson (Navajo/Hopi), jeweler; and Michelle Tsosie Sisneros (Navajo/Santa Clara Pueblo), painter. The award comes with a monetary grant.
Youth awards went to Christina Schultz (Navajo), weaver; Edward B. Lewis, III (Acoma Pueblo), painter/drawer; and Daniel Bird (Santo Domingo Pueblo), potter/sculptor. The award comes with a $500 grant.
SWAIA hosts the annual Indian Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It takes place August 20-21.
