Sand Creek Massacre site to be dedicated this week

The Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site in Colorado will be dedicated this Saturday.

The 12,500-acre site marks the November 29, 1864, massacre of nearly 160 Cheyenne and Arapaho elders, women and children. They were killed by Col. John Chivington and a state militia

The site was created through legislation sponsored by retired Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colorado), a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana. He will join Cheyenne and Arapaho descendants at the dedication.

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, who signed the papers to create the site on Monday, will discuss national parks today at 3pm on Ask the White House
