FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 2002 The Sand Creek Massacre Historic Site in Colorado, quickly approved by Congress after Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) tearfully read letters regarding the massacre of his Cheyenne and Arapaho ancestors, is in jeopardy. Frustrated with the Department of Interior's slow pace and cheap pockets, the owner of a 1,465-acre part of the site where the U.S. Army killed 163 men, women and children has put his property on the market. Accusing the government of negotiating in bad faith, William Dawson said the National Park is offering $332,000 for his $1.5 million ranch. Campbell says without the land, the site can't be completed. A National Park Service manager agreed. Get the Story:
