A bill to force Idaho tribes to negotiate a gasoline tax agreement has passed the House and Senate.
The bill sets a December 1 deadline to negotiate agreements. Otherwise, tribes will have to submit a gasoline distribution tax to the state.
At issue is an estimated $3.5 million in revenue. The tribes use it to fund their roads, schools and other infrastructure.
Two prior attempts to impose a tax on the tribes were rejected by the state and federal courts. This time, Idaho Republicans are imposing the tax on distributors who sell gas to tribes.
