House committee to take up Native Hawaiian bill

The House Natural Resources Committee will consider a bill to recognize a Native Hawaiian governing entity at a markup session this Wednesday.

H.R.505, the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2007, was introduced last month. It extends the policy of self-determination to the indigenous people of Hawaii.

The bill has passed the House in the past but an effort last year to push it through the Senate failed after it was blocked by Republicans. The GOP is attacking the bill, and other Native Hawaiian programs, as "race-based."

The markup takes place at 10am in Room 1324 of the Longworth House Office Building. Also on the schedule is H.R.865, the Copper Valley Native Allotment Resolution Act of 2007, a bill that would grant rights-of-way for electric transmission lines over certain Native allotments.
