Kimberly Hatcher-White rose through the ranks to become the new executive director of the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center.
Hatcher-White first worked for the tribe's casino in the 1990s. She used tribal tuition money to attend college and graduated, at age 39, from Eastern Connecticut State University.
After joining the museum, Hatcher-White became more involved in telling the tribe's story. That led her to seek the job of executive director after Theresa Bell, a tribal member, resigned.
"I feel it's important to have a tribal member in this position who has a love not only for the museum but a love of this culture and this tribe," she tells The New London Day.
Hatcher-White hopes to expand the museum's exhibits. She also wants the museum to explore complex tribal identity issues.
