The museum owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation in Connecticut is "stunned" by the loss of 30 to 40 historic Pequot baskets, The New London Day reports.
The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center had recently photographed the baskets, which date to the 1800s and 1900s, and was intending to catalog them. But they were lost to a fire that also destroyed an historic barn.
Another 15 baskets were fortunately spared. Kevin McBride, the museum's director of research, said the baskets represent an important time in Pequot history because they show interactions with non-Indians.
