North Dakota tribal colleges seek state funds

Leaders of North Dakota's tribal colleges testified in favor of a bill that would give them a share of state funds for educating non-Indians.

The five colleges receive federal funds to educate tribal members. But they don't get any money for non-Indians so they absorb the costs.

HB 1395 would change that by granting $700,000 for the five colleges. That would cover the cost of educating their non-Indian students for two years.

The House Education Committee is likely to act on the bill on Monday.
