North Dakota's five tribal colleges are supporting a bill that would help them educate students who are not tribal members.
Of the 2,600 tribal college students, about 175 are not enrolled in a tribe. That means the colleges can't receive federal funding to educate them.
To help the colleges, Rep. Jim Kasper, a Republican from Fargo, introduced a bill to provide $700,000 to the five institutions to cover two years' of education for non-tribal members. A hearing takes place next Tuesday before the House Education Committee.
