The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is taking more control of its housing programs.
The tribal council voted Monday to dissolve the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation. The authority was formed under a state Indian housing law.
The tribe itself will now be overseeing the housing program. About 170 employees will be become employees of the tribe.
The tribe receives about $31 million a year in Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act funds. Some members of Congress have threatened to cut the funds unless the Freedmen, who are the descendants of African slaves, retain citizenship in the tribe.
