Rep. Heather Wilson (R-New Mexico) is seeking to stop the Bush administration from eliminating the $33 million urban Indian health program.
Wilson's district includes two urban Indian clinics that serve 6,000 Native Americans. They would be forced to cut back services or close if they lose their $1.5 million in funding.
"Access to health care for the Indian population in Albuquerque is slowly deteriorating," she said. "These programs provide basic health care to people away from the reservation and deserve support."
Congress last year voted to restore the money to the clinics when President Bush proposed to eliminate the program.
