South Dakota water project gets extra funds

The office of Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota) announced additional funding for the Mni Wiconi Rural Water System that will serve three reservations and nine counties in South Dakota.

In 2007, Mni Wiconi will get $37.86 million, up from $32 million. The money will be used for construction, operations and maintenance.

The project will provide clean water to the Pine Ridge Reservation, the Rosebud Sioux Reservation and the Lower Brule Sioux Reservation. Congressional authorization expires in 2008 but work on the reservations has not been completed. The Oglala Sioux Tribe is lobbying for an extension through 2013 and for adequate funding to complete the project on time.
