Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Montana) introduced a resolution on Thursday to create the House Indian Affairs Committee.
Rehberg says the House needs an independent committee to hear Indian issues. Currently, the House Resources Committee has jurisdiction over tribal matters -- and it will stay that way, said Rep. Nick Rahall (D-West Virginia), the chairman.
"There is no serious consideration being given to proposals to divest the Natural Resources Committee of its jurisdiction over Indian affairs," he said in a statement provided to Gannett News Service.
The Senate has an Indian Affairs Committee, which held its first meeting of the 110th Congress yesterday.
The text of the H.Res.77 is not yet available in Thomas, the Congressional database.
