A record four women were elected by voters of the Zuni Tribe of New Mexico on Tuesday.
Dancy Simplicio was elected as lieutenant governor along with Norman Cooeyate for governor. They defeated Shirley Bellson, who was running for governor, and her running mate, Edward Wymetewa, by 77 votes.
In the council election, Shelly C. Chimoni won the most votes. She will be the first woman to serve as head of the council.
Two other women, Winona Stacy Peynetsa and Charlotte T. Bradley, an incumbent, won their elections.
