Nahua midwives an important tradition in Mexico

In rural areas of Mexico where Spanish is rarely spoken, Nahua midwives are preserving culture and saving lives.

The midwives carry on a tradition that dates to pre-Colonial times. They are highly respected in Nahua communities, where they take care of everything from the birth to family issues.

With the help of the Mexican government, they have a new role. The midwives are bringing Nahua women to hospitals and clinics, where they receive additional care that can save the lives of the patient and the newborn.
