Two tribal members from southern California are the first Indians elected to school boards in San Diego County.
Nubia Ruiz, a member of the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians, was elected to the Dehesa district board. Bonnie La Chappa, a member of the Barona Band of Mission Indians, won election to the Lakeside Union School District board.
Ruiz serves as director of Sycuan's education department. The Dehesa district has a 15 percent Indian student population.
Indian student make up about 3.4 percent of La Chappa's district.
