The California Integrated Waste Management Board, a state agency, allocated $1.75 million to clean up a dump site on the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Reservation.

The reservation has been targeted by illegal dumpers. The site in question has more than 400,000 cubic yards of waste that sit 30 feet high.

According to The Riverside Press-Enterprise, there are 16 illegal dumps on the 24,000-acre reservation. The Environmental Protection Agency put one site on the Superfund list while a federal judge ordered another one to be shut down although an underground fire later erupted there.
