The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation entered the world of boxing promotion in January 2004.
Less than three years later, the small California tribe is considering a force. The Sycuan boxing club has five world champions and several interim champions under its belt.
"Did I think we would have five world champions in less than three years? Yeah, in my dreams. We have been blessed," Scott Woodworth, a veteran of the boxing industry who was hired by the tribe, told The Los Angeles Times.
Several tribes host boxing events on their reservations. But only the Sycuan Band and the Seminole Tribe of Florida have become promoters.
