Six California tribes have formed political expenditure committee that recently spent money to support two Republican state lawmakers.
Team 2006 is made up of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Pechanga Band of Luiseo Indians, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, the Soboba Band of Luiseo Indians and the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. All the tribes are owners of successful gaming enterprises.
The tribes contributed more than $3 million to form Team 2006. The committee paid for mailers, television production, and polling for the Republican candidates.
The tribes say they will support Democrats as well. The Agua Caliente Band will be using the committee to support Proposition 84, a $5.4 billion bond measure to provide money for water, parks and coastal projects.
