The State University of New York's College of Environmental Science and Forestry announced the creation of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment.
The center will be headed by Dr. Robin Kimmerer, a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation from Oklahoma. She is a professor at the Environmental and Forest Biology department at the college.
Kimmerer wants to ensure every environmental science student knows and understands treaty rights, environmental justice and Native sciences. "This is a way to increase our ability to learn from each other and work together to solve environmental problems," she said.
The center is guided by an advisory board of members of several New York tribes. The school will set aside $10,000 for two scholarships for students from the Onondaga Nation.
